UPDATE: OKLAHOMA CITY – A standoff near S.W. 64th Street and May Ave. lasted for hours but ended peacefully.

Police took 31-year-old Orlando Martinez into custody around 9 p.m. Tuesday. He will likely face firearms and arson charges in relation to the standoff and the events that led up to it.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, police responded to shots fired at 2836 S.W. 62nd Street and May Ave.

Police say it all started when Martinez lost control and got into a fight with his mother, brother, sister and girlfriend around 4:15 p.m.

"At one point he left the residence, they locked the door trying to lock him out, he forced his way into the residence carrying a gas can he started putting gas throughout the residence threatening to burn the residence," Capt. Patrick Stewart with the Oklahoma Police Department said.

911 was called. As officers moved in gunshots were fired. Family members ran out of the house and the standoff began. Police blocked off May Ave at SW65th. Some residents were evacuated. Others told to stay inside.

Shawnda Hilley's mother-in-law lives down the block.

"We Did get a hold of her on the phone, she said she saw the sharp shooters going down the road in front of her house," said Hilley. " She said she was just going to stay in and stay low."

After about 4 hours, police were able to end the standoff.

"One of the most critical units is our tactical negotiators, any time our tact team comes out our negotiating team comes out as well they were the ones that were successful in diffusing the situation," said Capt. Stewart.
