OKLAHOMA CITY -- The federal government has awarded $16 million to Oklahoma public housing for improvements, though housing authorities need more than $26 billion in major repairs.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced Friday that the $16 million would be divided among 102 public housing authorities.

The funds are intended to allow the agencies to make large-scale improvements.

Oklahoma City is to receive $3.9 million, and Tulsa is getting $3.5 million.

HUD officials say the money only scratches the surface when it comes to the tremendous volume of needed improvements.
