WASHINGTON, DC -- Anthony Weiner resigned Thursday afternoon from Congress, more than a week after admitting he sent lewd photos and messages to different women on his Twitter account.

During a news conference at a senior center in Brooklyn, Weiner said the distraction he'd created had made it impossible for him to continue working in Congress.  His four-minute statement was interrupted several times by a heckler. Weiner didn't acknowledge the man.

The former congressman reportedly called Democratic party leaders Wednesday night and told them he would step down.  Both Democrats and Republicans have been calling on Weiner to resign after he confessed to sexting with some female Twitter followers.

Weiner, 46, was first elected to Congress in 1998.
