OKLAHOMA CITY -- Temperatures in the upper 90's are keeping heating and air conditioning companies very busy throughout the metro on a high number of service calls.

Summer has arrived in Oklahoma with a vengeance. Service Technician Mike Laugher spent a hot afternoon fixing an AC unit on the city's northwest side. Monday kept him quite busy with nearly a dozen calls.

"We've really picked up a lot over the last week because the temperatures get over 90," said Laugher. "I put in about 20 [to] 25 hours just between Saturday and Sunday."

Laugher's company, Drabek and Hill, has been averaging up to 40 calls a day in the past three weeks.

Phones have also been ringing off the hook at First Time Heat and Air where Jerry Ellis works.

"We're overwhelmed," said Ellis. " ... You get more calls than you can handle, and you just try to work long hours and satisfy every customer you can get."

Both Ellis and Laugher say most of the calls they receive on the first hot days of the season can be avoided.

"One of the biggest problems we run into [are] customers not changing their filters," said Laugher. "The filter gets clogged up and reduces the amount of air flow that can go through the system. [That] causes the unit to ice up."

Simple check-ups can keep the unit running smoothly all summer long.

"[It's] just simple maintenance," said Ellis. "Call the company and get on a maintenance program... you'll avoid these [service] calls in 100-degree weather."

Service technicians say for the very best results you should change your AC filter every 30 days. But, they also say most people change them just once a year.
