OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City Zoo is asking the public to help name its new precious pachyderm.

Asha the elephant gave birth to a 304-pound baby girl Friday, April 15. The choices have been narrowed down to three, and the zoo wants its "ele-fans" to help pick the best one.

  • Malee: Pronounced "MAY-lee." The name is Thai and means "flower" or "jasmine." Zookeepers say this is their personal favorite.
  • Annika: Pronounced "AH-nik-uh." The name is Dutch for "favor" or "grace."
  • Hanako: Pronounced "HAH-nuh-koh." This name means "flower girl" in Japanese.

Fans can cast their vote for their favorite name on the Oklahoma City Zoo's website.

Asha and her calf are under 24-hour watch. They won't be put on public view in the new elephant habitat for a few weeks, which gives mom and baby time to bond, and allows veterinary staff to monitor their health.
