My 2 Cents: Schools Closing Versus Opening Argument

I know there are some parents out there who are bent out of shape about schools being opened or closed Friday. Some Edmond parents have been sounding off about the fact that Edmond and Deer Creek are about the only large districts in the metro closed Friday.

I know there are some parents out there who are bent out of shape about schools being opened or closed Friday.

Some Edmond parents have been sounding off about the fact that Edmond and Deer Creek are about the only large districts in the metro closed Friday.

News 9's news director, who lives in North Edmond, just e-mailed me a picture from near her neighborhood. A teenage girl slid into a utility pole and banged her head. News 9's news director sat with the teen until paramedics could check her out.

That image scares us parents of teenage drivers to death.

Folks, these school district transportation directors are doing their best.

Yes, the main thoroughfares in Edmond are mostly clear, and maybe your neighborhood is, but there are a lot of hilly neighborhoods that still have snow covered roads.

Tough for the buses, and maybe more dangerous for the high schoolers who would have to take them on in the morning.

And if the bus get's stuck or runs late, do you want your child waiting outside for 45 minutes in single digit windchills? I don't.

You can't please everyone, but another day added into the schedule will be forgotten much more quickly than a school bus full of kids in a ditch would be.
