EDMOND, Oklahoma -- Many teachers e-mailed or sent home assignments with students which are due the first day back after snow days.

Administrators say the learning shouldn't stop when the snow starts. But parents argue if kids are going to have to make up the days anyway, why are they working now?

Snow days typically conjure up images of snowball fights and sledding but for Piedmont High School sophomore Regan Johnston, it means homework.

"I got a six page language assignment and I had to write a 400 page essay and then I had to do a little bit of Spanish," said Regan Johnston. "And whatever day we come back we're expecting to have four tests."

And it was not just this high school student. Students across the state have had to keep studying even when the snow was falling. Some Oakdale Elementary School parents were e-mailed lists of daily assignments.

But Regan Johnston's mom said she for the most part she had no problem with it.

"I wasn't totally against it because I know they have to make up work and it keeps them busy when they can't do anything else," said Angela Johnston.

But some parents did.

"Both of my kids came home with "snow day homework." My question was however don't they have to make up the days? So, it's not like they are missing out on something. Irritating," wrote one Edmond parent on Facebook.

"No. We're giving your child some practice work. We're giving your child extra opportunities to learn," said Tulake's Principal Lee Roland.

Roland argues students need to stay focused no matter what. He told all his teachers to send home work.

"We really need every available minute and the time we are out of school we have to try and capture that as well," said Principal Roland.

In addition, state testing is coming up so teachers don't want to lose any learning time before then.
