OKLAHOMA CITY -- Thousands of OG&E customers in the metro and surrounding areas spent several hours shivering in the cold when their power went out Thursday morning.

It wasn't like December 2007 when ice storms knocked out power for 100,000 OG&E customers, but Wednesday's snow storm caused power outages for about 7,000 customers. OG&E said Thursday's outage is being blamed on the extremely frigid temperatures.

Four thousand of those customers lived in the eastern Oklahoma County towns of Harrah, Arcadia, Jones, and Spencer.

Kevin Jackson of Harrah lost power for about three hours Thursday morning. He built a fire in his fireplace and contemplated the value of electricity.

"It's kind of like my microwave," said Jackson. "You don't realize how much you use one of them till you don't have it."

By mid-morning, power had been restored to all except a handful in Harrah, and 1,400 OG&E customers system-wide.

At one point Thursday morning, more than 9,100 power outages were reported in Oklahoma by the state's two largest electric utilities.

Public Service Company of Oklahoma reported 4,412 outages with more than 3,000 of those in Nowata County. Nowata reached a record low temperature Thursday of minus 31 degrees.
