OKLAHOMA CITY -- Although most people stayed off the roads during Tuesday's winter storm, some drivers braved the brutal weather and became stranded.

The state activated the Oklahoma National Guard to help rescue drivers in trouble. The National Guard reported Wednesday morning that 82 people contacted emergency personnel for help, while Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers rescued 132 drivers and passengers who were stuck on snowy roads.

The Oklahoma National Guard also reported using these resources:

  • 163 guard members
  • 59 humvees
  • 10 two-and-a-half ton trucks
  • One wrecker
  • One flat-bed truck

Drivers stranded in their vehicles should call 911, star 55, or 1-800-800-2481. Tell the operator your location, including highway mile marker along with vehicle make and the number of people in your car. This will assist emergency personnel in finding you.

If you're on Twitter, you can tweet the above information to @okem. You can also text a family member and have them relay your location to one of the above numbers.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health reports:

123 total storm-related injuries

24 transportation injuries

2 exposures (could be hypothermia, chest pains, shoveling snow, etc.)

13 cuts

77 falls (significant number)
