OKLAHOMA CITY – They are many things a homeless or disadvantaged veteran can't afford, but Thursday hundreds of local vets received everything from health screenings to dental checks and haircuts, all for free at the "Sooner Stand Down."

The vets also learned more about a VA Medical Center program that gives them a new beginning. The event took place at the Homeless Alliance WestTown Resource Center.

"It helps them integrate back into work life if they have not had work history in a while and from there the goal would be just to get them permanent housing and a job," said Pam Stark with the VA Medical Center.

"I feel good about this cause it's a help. Anytime you can help the community and veterans and make their day a little better than the next day...It's good," said Oklahoma veteran Albert Kidd.

The "Sooner Stand Down" will also be open at the Homeless Alliance West Town Center Friday, October 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The center is located at located at N.W. 3rd and Virginia Avenue.

The term "Stand Down" originated during World War One when soldiers were pulled back from the trenches for physical and mental respite.
