OKLAHOMA CITY – A group of military veterans could be seen running through the metro Monday. They're running from New York to Los Angeles to raise money for injured service men and women.
The event is called the "Gumpathon" Charity Challenge and an Oklahoma army veteran and above-knee amputee is running right along with them.
Bill Dunham, 42, lost his leg in the service more than two decades ago. He's thriving now with a prosthetic leg and is joined the group of six servicemen as they ran through Oklahoma.
The group visited Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics patient care center to serve as inspiration to fellow amputees.
"I got shot and lost my leg above the knee. I didn't run again. Yesterday I did my first mile in 21 years," Dunham said. "This race really stepped it up for me. It's a shame it took this much time, but I'm glad I did it and I'm going to continue to run, as long as my body holds out."
The Gumpathon got its name after one of the amputees saw the movie Forrest Gump and thought that running across America seemed like an interesting idea.
