ARDMORE, Oklahoma -- The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded a $1.37 million grant to the State Veterans Center in Ardmore for facility improvements.

"Oklahoma's Veterans served their country and deserve the best care our country can offer," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. "This federal support, along with the state's, will help to provide them a safe, caring environment."

Under the grant, VA will provide 65 percent of the total cost to renovate the center's heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, which is estimated to be $2.1 million. The nursing care facility is a historic site, which was originally built in 1910 as a home for Civil War Veterans.

The Ardmore facility is one of seven Oklahoma Veterans centers providing intermediate to skilled nursing care and residence to wartime Veterans.

Last year, VA spent about $1.9 billion in Oklahoma on behalf of the state's 329,600 Veterans. VA operates medical centers in Oklahoma City and Muskogee and outpatient clinics across the state.
