OKLAHOMA CITY -- A national education foundation surprised a Mid-Del Public Schools teacher Tuesday with a prestigious award and a $25,000 check.

The Milken Family Foundation awarded Jennifer Evans with its 2010 Educator Award. Evans teaches math to fifth-grade students at Highland Park Elementary School in Oklahoma City.

Evans had no idea she would receive the award. The school held a special assembly and that's when a representative from the Milken Family Foundation surprised the 33-year-old with the news she'd been named one of the top educators in the country.

"I'm astounded and very thrown off my balance," Evans said. "We have so many great teachers here. I thought that anyone of us could have been this award winner."

Superintendent Sandy Garrett presented the $25,000 check to Evans and praised her for her dedication to her students. Evans said she planned to use the money to help pay for her wedding later this month. She also wanted to help the school buy some science equipment.

The Milken Family Foundation searches the country for teachers who use innovative methods to educate children. People cannot be nominated or apply for the award.

Evans will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Los Angeles next year, along with the other finalists for the Presidential Math and Science Teacher Award.

Evans said her teaching career was inspired and influenced by Bill Uselton, her calculus teacher at Choctaw High School. She said his teaching methods helped her learn to love math.
