NEWCASTLE, Oklahoma -- A longtime employee in the Newcastle school system has admitted she stole almost $22,000 from the school district and spent it on gambling.

Diane Foster, the district's business manager, confessed to writing payroll checks to herself.

"She said at the time that she was on pain medication and that probably impaired her ability a little bit, her judgment, and that she was using the money to go gambling at casinos," said Assistant District Attorney David Brockman.

Foster said she wanted to pay the money back and sent the superintendent a check for the full amount. But prosecutors said that won't get her off the legal hook.

"The bottom line is, even though she pays restitution, she still committed a crime whether she paid restitution or not," Brockman said.

The school district has suspended Foster. Prosecutors advised the superintendent to hold onto that restitution check and not cash it until Foster's case is settled.

School officials are adopting some new checks and balances to prevent this from happening again.
