OKLAHOMA CITY -- The flu vaccines for the upcoming flu season will contain protection against the H1N1 virus.

The Oklahoma City-County Health Department will have vaccines available in October.

This year, the regular, seasonal flu shot will contain protection against the H1N1 virus. Last year, people had to receive two different shots. Many people chose not to get the H1N1 vaccine because of concerns about its safety.

Health officials said the vaccine is safe and now everyone older than six months needs the shot.

"There was something about that virus that did not require cold weather conditions, and people being in closed spaces to circulate," said Vicki Monks, Oklahoma City-County Health Department.

The other big change will be the new cost attached to the vaccine. Budget problems and the increased cost of the flu vaccine means the health department will charge $25 for shots.

Those who will qualify for the free flu shots include:

  • Families living under the poverty level
  • Children qualifying for the Vaccine for Children (VFC) Program
  • Any adult on Medicaid
  • Adults 65 years and older, who are on Medicare and do not belong to an HMO
