OKLAHOMA CITY – Whether it's Indian tacos, turkey legs or roasted corn, Oklahoma City-County Health Department inspectors are making food safety a top priority at the Oklahoma State Fair.
"The vendors at our State Fair have a good record with food safety," said OCCHD Special Events Coordinator Sasan Pilehvar. "We train food handlers in the basics like the importance of hand washing and keeping food hot enough or cold enough to prevent the growth of pathogens."
Inspectors will be checking vendors regularly to ensure they are following food safety precautions.
OCCHD will also train almost 1,000 food handlers in safety precautions. Many out of state vendors hire local people as temporary workers to staff the food stands. Local civic groups also set up food booths that are staffed mostly by volunteers.
"We see a lot of people working at food booths at the fair who've never done this before, so that's why this training is so important," said Food Safety Education Coordinator Tonya Moore.
The training is a short course in the most essential elements of food safety and participants are issued food-handler's cards that must be displayed in the vendor booths.
