OKLAHOMA CITY -- People who are sensitive to pollutants such as children, older people and people with asthma should avoid prolonged outdoor activity, according to the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.

The Oklahoma DEQ issued an Air Quality Advisory for the Oklahoma City area for Saturday afternoon.

DEQ warns that even short-term exposure may impair lung functions and cause some respiratory distress to sensitive populations. Exposure to ozone over a longer period even at relatively low concentrations can significantly reduce lung function in normal, healthy people as well - especially during exercise.

Symptoms include chest pain, coughing, sneezing, nausea, headache and pulmonary congestion.
