OKLAHOMA CITY -- Garage sales are common traditions on Saturday mornings, but a local church organized a "garage give away" to help flood victims begin to piece their lives back together.

LifeChurch.tv organized the garage give away event to help dozens of homeowners devastated by last month's floods. The community came together to donate all kinds of furniture for the homes. Each homeowner was assigned a number and those families were able to choose everything from furniture to appliances and beds for their homes to start the rebuilding process.

"I'm really hoping it will be blessing the needs of the people who were victims of the flood," said Daphne Herrington, who donated all of her furniture to the garage give away.

Herrington said it was a higher power that brought her to her decision to donate after watching the flood strip away the livelihood of many on the news one night.

"God said to me your furniture, and I said what? He said, 'I want you to give all your furniture,' and I said, 'God this is all I have,'" Herrington said.

Herrington has been out of a job for quite some time, but she said that didn't stop her from giving up all she had.

"All of my bedroom furniture, my bed, my armoire, dresser, bedroom furniture, chest, table, all of my dishes, pictures, candles, lamps," Herrington said.

She gave it all to help residents like John Hiser.

"Starting over is kinda weird. Kinda like you know, what you used to have then you gotta think of what you really need to have," Hiser said.

Hiser's home was ravaged by ankle deep water when the flood hit in June.

"All of a sudden I heard a woosh, and water blew in past the front door and started coming in the hallway, carpets were going," Hiser said.

Fast forward to today, homeowners like the Hisers are picking up what they can to rebuild their lives.

"From the get go, the church is amazing. We would not be where we are if they weren't here, because every time we turn around, there was somebody at the house trying to help," Hiser said.

Saturday's garage give away event helped more than 60 families.
