SHAWNEE, Oklahoma – Search crews continue to look for a drowning victim in Pottawatomie County.

The man disappeared in the North Canadian River Sunday night near Shawnee. The 21-year-old was fishing with friends when he went under and never resurfaced.

The search was postponed last night, but the Oklahoma Highway Patrol dive team headed back out to the river at 8 a.m. to resume looking for the man. Bi-planes also assisted in the search.

Debris in the river and recent rains and floods have made the search more difficult. River levels are much higher and currents are stronger.

A dive team from Ardmore was also called in.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth said the dives teams would continue the search Tuesday morning. Dangerous river conditions led the sheriff to call off the search around 7 p.m.

In the meantime, people have been posted near the spot they believe the body is overnight.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said this is the tenth drowning reported this month. OHP said many of these drownings may have been prevented had the individuals involved worn life jackets.

The sheriff said many people don't realize just how treacherous and how dangerous the water currents can be and it's not worth the risk.
