HOMINY, OK -- Hominy Police are trying to get a large number of guns off the streets. They say someone broke into a home and raided the gun safe.

Jerye Lunn was enjoying a nice day with her grandson Hunter when the News On 6 told her what happened a couple of blocks away, how thieves broke into a neighbor's house.

"It's sad. It's sad for the loss of people's property, they work for it," said Jerye Lunn, a Hominy resident.

In Hominy, police only have about a dozen home break-ins to investigate each year, and those cases typically don't rise to the level of this latest one.

"A thief is just bad news," said Charlie Arnold, Hominy Police Chief.

Over the weekend, someone got through a window at a house on 4th street and went straight for a gun safe.

"What they used to open the vault with was a screw jack off of a car," said Chief Arnold.

Once those thieves were able to pry open the door, they were able to reach in to grab guns, and we're not talking just one or two. They got rifles, shotguns, and a .22 caliber handgun. Altogether, they stole 19 guns.

"I can't say that that amount of guns in a residence is abnormal for this area, because it is probably not," Chief Arnold said.

They also got a lot of cash.

"I think they're lazy people, trying to live off of others any way they can," Lunn said.

While a burglary in her neighborhood frustrates Lunn, any time guns are stolen, especially this many, it concerns law enforcement.

"Because it can get into the wrong hands," Chief Arnold said.

Hominy police, with OSBI assistance, are working to find the thieves.

"Thieves always leave something behind that they don't know they left behind," said Chief Arnold.

Investigators hope people will call officers if they see anything suspicious, like someone flashing around cash or trying to sell a lot of guns.

Anyone with information that could help investigators CAN call Hominy Police at 918-885-4545.
