OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City police and Douglass High School administrators are investigating how and why a 16-year-old student had a loaded gun on campus.

Thursday afternoon, a Douglass High School student told an OCPD Campus Resource Officer that a 16-year-old male student may be in possession of a weapon. The student was searched but no firearm was located.

Police said later another student told officers the male student who had been in possession of the gun gave it to 16-year-old Latricia Vaught. Police located the handgun in Vaught's backpack and she was arrested on one felony count of possessing a concealed firearm on school property.

The male student is still under investigation but has not been arrested at this time.

Douglass High School Principal Brian Staples said students are scanned by metal detectors and backpacks are checked when they enter the building at two different entrances, but the school is still a public building with multiple entrances.

Parents were notified of the incident.

Timothy Roper is a junior at Douglass High School and said the news was disappointing.

"I heard something about a gun, basically it had to do with a girl and they found it," said Roper. "I was pretty shocked. I knew Douglass ain't the best school, but I didn't think it would get this bad."

Staples said this was the first time since he became principal two years ago that a loaded weapon was found on campus.

Although Vaught and the other student in question was an isolated event, extra security measures will be in effect, administrators said.

Douglass High School is on heightened awareness and additional police will be visible on campus all day Friday.

The Oklahoma City Public School District does not tolerate guns or any other weapons on any OKCPS campus and administrators will work with police to prosecute any student or person who violates this district policy.
