OKLAHOMA CITY -- Officer Kris Hunter, who was shot Saturday night during a chase in northeast Oklahoma City, shared his story and how the shooting has given him a new outlook on life.

Hunter is currently being treated for his injuries at OU Medical Center. Hunter was hit in the arm and possibly the leg during a shootout involving 28-year-old Tremall Anderson.

Officer Hunter said there was a moment when he wondered if he would survive.

"It's almost like a dream. I didn't expect it to happen," Hunter said.

Yet after seven years on the police force, it did happen. Officer Hunter described the experience of being shot as spooky and said he feels extremely lucky to be alive.

"I was laying there and rolling around. I realized my left arm wasn't functioning like it should. It took a little while to realize ‘Wow, I've been shot,'" Officer Hunter said.

Police say the incident started when another officer, Daniel Godsil, tried to make a routine traffic stop and Anderson refused to pull over. During the pursuit, Hunter deployed stop sticks and, as Anderson drove by, police say he opened fire on Hunter.

"At that time, I'm wearing a coat. I can't see where I'm shot and feel blood going down my sleeve, arteries and veins. You don't know how bad you are. It was a big time rush. I didn't want to wait for an ambulance. Get me in a car, get me to the hospital and get me treated," Hunter said.

After shooting at Hunter, Anderson traveled another two blocks before stopping. Police say when he stopped, he got out of the vehicle and began firing at Godsil. Godsil returned fire, killing Anderson.

"Well you have a new found respect for life in itself. When you have a near death experience because that's what it felt like to me. It's very scary," said Hunter.

Officer Hunter should be released soon from the hospital, but he will need therapy for his arm.

Police say Officer Godsil is on routine paid administrative leave.
