The "Oklahoma Blizzard" Google Map Project launched during the height of the 2009 blizzard received a huge response online. More than 100,000 Internet users logged onto the site throughout the holiday season posting updates on stranded vehicles, road conditions and shelters. Site creator, Sid Burgess, says he was frustrated watching the television coverage during the blizzard and wanted to create an online clearinghouse for information and resources.
On Facebook, a new group formed in response to the blizzard called "I was in the Oklahoma Snow Blizzard of 2009!!!" More than 50,000 Internet users have since joined, with nearly half the group forming in the first 24 hours. On a group discussion board, KWTV and KOTV asked group members to rate the Oklahoma Department of Transportation's performance.
