If you return gifts every year you make want to think twice before removing the tag. Experts say many major retailers are changing their rules on gift returns.

One retail analyst says retailers are trying to minimize financial losses in this economy. If you don't pay attention it could cost you or the person who got your gift.

While the Home Depot still allows you to return items within 90 days, it now reserves the right to limit or refuse returns at any time and for any reason.

Other retailers like Office Depot are reducing the number of days you have to bring certain items back, like computers. In fact, when it comes to electronics be careful to check the return policy wherever you shop. Some stores like Best Buy and Target now have steep restocking fees.

For the most part there won't be any questions if you have a receipt. But if you don't you'll likely end up with a merchandise credit or the lowest sale price, even if the person who bought it paid the full amount.

Wal-Mart and Target actually track customers' returns. So if you make a habit of returning things without a receipt they can refuse to take the item back completely.

By law, all stores are required to post these polices so the consumers can see them.
