This was an eye opening story for me.  I assumed if you had a contract, then it was legally binding.  And I suppose it is - as long as what's written in the contract doesn't contradict the law.  And that's what appears to have happened here.  The law is going to supersede what's in the contract.

We turned to Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma for help with this story... and they may be able to help you as well.  They offer free legal advice and discounted services.  Click here to go directly to their website.

To be eligible, you must be at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty level threshold.  For instance, if you have a family of 4, your annual income can't exceed $27,563.  But if you are at or below 200 percent of the poverty level (family of 4 makes no more than $44,100), then you may still be eligible.

Your best bet to check eligibility is to call.  Their Oklahoma City Office is 405-557-0020.  If you live in another area, click here for a link to other offices.

Also, if you're a "senior" (60 years and older) you can contact Legal Aid's Senior Law Project at 557-0014.  They offer free advice.  For free representation, you must meet certain guidelines.
