OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City police have arrested the suspect accused of attacking an elderly man as he left an Oklahoma City casino.
The robbery happened at Remington Park just before noon Saturday. Police say the victim had his wallet and car stolen, and the suspect, 48-year-old Madarryl Smiley, was caught on tape just moments before inside the casino.
Oklahoma City police officers say Smiley was actually walking around the casino trying to find an easy victim.
That victim ended up being a 90-year-old man who police say was struck over the head with some type of object while in parking lot at Remington Park. After the victim was struck, Smiley was then able to get the man's wallet and drive off with his car.
"Robbery is a victim of opportunity. If they see you’re a weak victim, someone not paying attention to their surroundings or they might be an easy target, those are the people that are going to be most victimized by these criminals,” said Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Mike Klika.
The 90-year-old victim was injured during the incident. He suffered a broken hip. The victim's name has not been released.
Police found Smiley driving the stolen vehicle, a white four-door Pontiac with the license plate 223-AG0. There was a short pursuit and scuffle, but the 48-year-old was arrested around 11 p.m. near 26th Street.
Smiley is facing charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault and battery of a police officer, one charge of obstruction and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
