OKLAHOMA CITY -- One of the state's most controversial lawmakers is drawing an equally controversial opponent. Representative Sally Kern will face a transgendered attorney in her next race for the state House.

Brittany Novotny made it clear she wants this race not to be about her personal decision to become a woman, something that is likely going to be easier said than done.

"Today, I'm officially announcing my candidacy for State Representative in House District 84,” said Brittany Novotny, the Democratic candidate in Dist. 84.

It's a decision that is likely to be one of the state's most publicized House races.

Brittany Novotny, a transgender woman, is running against State Representative Sally Kern. Kern is famous for saying 'the homosexual agenda is destroying this nation' in 2008.

Kern also received national attention when she wrote a proclamation blaming part of the country's economic problems on the nation's acceptance of gay marriage. That's just one reason Novotny said Kern is out of touch with voters.

"It's a waste of time if you're not out there doing things in the legislature that is not bringing jobs to our constituents, that are improving education," Novotny said.

But Kern, who was re-elected last year for a third term, said running against a transgender woman and Novotny's personal decisions will not impact how she runs.

"I'm not answerable to her decisions. I will do what I've always done, I will run a campaign openly, honestly on the issues," said Rep. Kern.

But Kern was much more direct when asked how her constituents would feel about the race. Kern doesn't believe Novotny stands a chance in her district.

"I believe Oklahomans are great people that are going to judge me for the person I am and whether I can go out and do the job they're looking for," Novotny said.

Novotny did not say how much she was able to raise for the election at this point. However, she said she has numerous donors including Senator Andrew Rice and former Corporate Commissioner Jim Roth.

Voters will go to polls for the District 84 race in November of 2010.
