OKLAHOMA CITY -- The US Mint will not use the Oklahoma City National Memorial or the Survivor Tree on the new Oklahoma quarter but instead have decided on a popular Sulphur park.
US Mint officials said they want to use a national park and the memorial is just an affiliate of the park services.
"We're obviously disappointed. We had hoped that the governor's request of the memorial being on the back of the new Oklahoma quarter would be honored, but it's a mere technicality," said Kari Watkins, executive director of the Oklahoma City National Memorial.
The Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur will be featured on the new quarter that is set to be released in 2011.
