OKLAHOMA CITY -- Convenience stores in Oklahoma City are fighting what they call "unfair credit card fees."
Circle K stores across the nation are asking customers to sign a petition that will be handed over to U.S. lawmakers who are looking at legislation that will help limit or eliminate these fees.
Every time a consumer uses a credit card, the business is hit with a fee by the credit card company. Those costs are then passed on to the consumer through the prices of the products sold.
"One fee is a fixed fee for every transaction that's made. The other is a percentage fee and that depends on the dollar amount of that transaction," said Lynda Gromek, the retail operations director of Circle K stores in Oklahoma.
Gromek said these fees cost Americans a total of $48 billion a year, which is more than credit card annual fees, cash advance fees, over-the-limit fees and late fees combined.
Circle K expects to deliver nearly three-quarters of a million signatures to Congress after the petition drive concludes on Labor Day.
