With the hot temperatures many of us are seeing our electric bills skyrocket. The good news is that there are a few ways to help you save on your electric bill.

For lights you want on during the night, such as outdoor lighting, there are photocell adaptors. These devices simply screw into the socket where the light bulb normally goes then you just screw the bulb into the device. The photocell in them senses when it's light or dark. When the sun goes down it will automatically turn on the light and of course when the sun comes up in the morning it automatically turns the light off. The photo controls come in may sizes for different types of bulbs and applications.

While photocell adaptors can be used inside, there is something that may be better for you such as a motion sensing light control. Some brands call it a motion sensor switch or an occupancy control. You may have noticed businesses are starting to use them because of the amount of energy, money they can save. The unit easily replaces a light switch on the wall. Once installed the unit will automatically sense when someone enters the room and turn on the light. After a set time of no movement in the area, the control will turn the light off.

They are also good for closets and hallways, you know, places the kids typically turn on the light and forget to turn it off. While these devices are easy to install, be sure to turn off the power at the breaker box before working with electricity and follow the directions. If you aren't handy either ask a friend who is or hire a licensed electrician to do the installation.
