OKLAHOMA CITY - The amount of money Oklahoma spends per student is among the lowest in the nation, according to a report released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.
At $7,420 a student, Oklahoma ranked 47th in the amount of money spent on each pupil. Arizona, Tennessee, Idaho and Utah were the only states to spend less.
New York spent the most per student at $15,981.
The report was based on data collected for the 2006-07 school year from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The Oklahoma Education Association is spearheading an initiative to increase spending per pupil. Their proposal would require the state to fund education at the regional average.
The current regional average is about $9,078, according to the Education Association.
The bulk of Oklahoma education expenditures were fund by the state and local school districts. State government provides about $2.7 billion while local district revenues accounted for about $2 billion. The federal government provides about $650 million, according to the Census Bureau.
