OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Bethany Children's Center provided free bike checks to keep kids safe this summer.

Bike expert Russ Bainbridge said not every bicycle is dangerous, but there are many bikes that are dangerous because they are not correctly assembled.

"Sometimes it's kind of a wonder that they get put together the way they do, forks are on backwards, wheels on backwards. You see some pretty strange things," said Ray DeLong, who sells bicycles. "It's kind of a shame that these young kids are riding these death traps."

That's why the Bethany Children's Center brought in bike experts to check the safety of bikes for families in the Metro.

Bainbridge said just a few simple repairs can make all the difference, but the most important way to stay safe is to wear a helmet. Every year thousands of children are taken to emergency rooms with injuries from not wearing a helmet. Some of those children will die from their injuries.

"They definitly need to early on. It builds a habit so they're already in helmets," Brainbridge said.

During Saturday's bicycle inspection, the Children's Center provided free helmets to children who did not already own one.
