OKLAHOMA CITY -- A new study shows video games can actually be just as good as any other moderate workout.
A recent study at the OU Health Sciences Center shows children playing games like the Nintendo Wii or Dance Dance Revolution are getting their fair share of daily exercise.
Read the study's findings published in the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
"Actually the energy expenditure was the same between doing the Dance Dance Revolution at the highest level and moderate intensity walking, which is about two-and-a-half miles per hour on the treadmill," said Dr. Caser Hester with the OU Health Sciences Center.
Fourteen boys and 9 girls, ages 10 to 13, were used for the research. Doctors said kids who played these games for long periods of time can benefit greatly, especially if they tend to stay away from traditional exercise.
"These video games may actually be a good alternative for kids who don't want to go out and do other activities," Hester said.
Despite the results of the survey, doctors still said the best way to keep kids fit is to get outside and play.
