OKLAHOMA CITY -- The stage is set for an historic race in Oklahoma. For the first time in state history a female could serve in the state's top position.

Congresswoman Mary Fallin and Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins are both vying for the governorship. Both candidates spoke about how this opportunity could impact future generations.

For years, these two women have played large roles in Oklahoma politics, and now, they're ready to hold the top seat as governor.

Congresswoman Mary Fallin got her experience as the state's former lieutenant governor.

"Anytime the governor was gone, I was the governor so I've actually had the opportunity to serve as governor before," said Republican Congresswoman Mary Fallin.

The current Lt. Governor does the same. Jari Askins said her years as a judge and in the state legislature have prepared her for the race and beyond.

"I've recognized that as we move into these next four years, it's going to be a tough time in Oklahoma. There will be tough decisions that have to be made," Lt. Governor Jeri Askins said.

Both candidates agree Oklahoma is ready for a female governor. The younger generation is looking to them as role models.

"These women who are running for governor seat and other government seats, they're paving the way for these girls now and giving them the opportunity," said Susan Bohl with the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma.

Rachel Bohl, is a Girl Scout, and leader in training. She is learning skills that will last as lifetime and she would like to someday be governor.

"You would be able to help people everywhere and make Oklahoma a better place," Rachel Bohl said.

Having two women run for Governor and possibly hold the title, inspires young ladies like Rachel, if not to pursue politics but other leadership roles.

"I grew up in a small town from a family that was not rich or famous, but I worked hard and kept persevering and that you can be anything you want to be if you dream big," Fallin said.

"That is the message we wish to say is ‘If you have a dream and have a desire to fill that dream then prepare yourself and go for it,'" Askins said.

Twenty three states have elected female governors, including neighboring states, Kansas and Texas.

State Senator Randy Brogdon and Attorney General Drew Edmondson are also in the race for Oklahoma governor in 2010.
