EDMOND, Oklahoma - An Edmond police officer's daughter was recently diagnosed with leukemia and working out is helping lift the family's financial burden.

Eight-year-old Kennedy Stearns was diagnosed with leukemia in April. Her father, Edmond police officer Jason Stearns, is overcome with the support he has seen from local law agencies.

"Really the community has come together for something like this and it just seems like everybody is on board and helping us out," said Jason Stearns.

Inside the gym, the law enforcement community shows their strength in numbers. They are helping to lift the burden of medical bills. Every curl, bench press and push up is money for Kennedy's treatments.

The owner of the gym and close friend of the Stearns family organized Leukemia Lift in honor of Kennedy.

"I felt like this was something that I can do. I think a lot of people when children get sick feel like there is something they can do and for me this is something I felt I could do," said Leukemia Lift organizer Brian Attebery.

As for Kennedy, her illness is in remission.

"However the treatment for leukemia, childhood leukemia is for her type and her age is about two and a half years so we will be continuing treatment for quite some time," Stearns said.

But Kennedy is not letting the treatments slow her down, and her father said, as long as the community is there to support them anything is possible.

"It's really made us realize what is important," Kennedy's father said.

The Stearns family is also giving back. A portion of the money they receive from Leukemia Lift will be donated to children's cancer research efforts in Oklahoma.
