Northeast
What's the least desirable forecast for the first day of summer and Father's
Day? More rain!

Developing coastal low pressure, sliding southeastward off Long Island on
Sunday, will bring locally heavy rain to southeast New York, New Jersey and
parts of west-central and southern New England.

Other parts of the Northeast will be at risk for at least scattered showers.
Only central and northern Maine, western Pennsylvania and the southern
Virginias may escape the second part of the weekend rain free.

Highs Sunday will range from the much-below-average 60s in the heart of the
rain and clouds over New York City, Hartford and Boston to the 70s in western
and northern New York and the 80s in the southern Mid-Atlantic.

Once in place, the coastal low will meander around Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
and possibly even Thursday keeping showers over New England and at times
westward into New York and eastern sections of the Mid-Atlantic.

South
Summer's start will live up to its oppressive billing across the South.

Around the hot upper-level high-pressure ridge, a few thunderstorms in the
southern Plains and from eastern Tennessee to the Savannah River Valley will
only add to the tropical humidity levels.

Highs Sunday will range from near average to perhaps 15 degrees above average.
Much of the region will be in the muggy 90s, but southern Alabama, southern
Georgia and northern Florida will near or surpass 100 degrees with heat
indices locally topping 110 degrees.

The South will stay hot through the upcoming week, but the core of most above
average temperatures will shift westward.

Most of the region will be rain free through midweek.

Midwest
A warm front will extend from Nebraska to Kentucky Sunday.

A few thunderstorms will pop in the Plains and lower Ohio Valley, but the
heaviest thunderstorms, some severe, will focus on Iowa, and western Illinois.

The Great Lakes will be mostly rain free.

Temperatures will be average or above average regionwide on Sunday, ranging
from the upper 70s and near 80 along the Canadian border to the 90s in the
central Plains, Missouri and lower Ohio Valley.

West
On Sunday, a sluggish cold front will streak from the high Plains of eastern
Montana and western North Dakota to the Nevada Great Basin.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms, popping across much of the Northwest
Sunday could turn severe in eastern Idaho and adjacent counties.

Temperatures will still be well below average on Sunday, but will moderate by
Tuesday.

On Sunday, expect highs in the 50s and 60s. Much of the Intermountain region
will be in the 60s and 70s. Eighties will be prevalent along the Front Range
and the central California valleys. The Southwest will heat up into the more
typical 100s.
