RUSH CREEK, Oklahoma - The Rush Creek Volunteer Fire Department finally has a place to call home.

The department has been without a fire station for years, but after long hours, grants and countless fundraisers, firefighters said their hard work has paid off.

"We basically started from scratch with little to nothing with donated items and came up with what we got here today," said Rush Creek Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Gordon.

Two years ago, the Rush Creek volunteer firefighters didn't have a fire station or new equipment. They met at a local church, trained at a neighboring station and parked trucks at their barns. The department's newest truck was from the 80s and all trucks were painted and equipped by the volunteer firefighters themselves.

"For everything to come together this far, this quick, it's been, I don't know how to describe it. It's been a big reward to see it get here," Gordon said.

The volunteers are among the first responders for the 46 square miles in Garvin County, which has kept the department busy. They have already responded to more calls this year than all of 2008.

"We don't plan on stopping and we're not through yet. We got to get to the finish," said Rush Creek Fire Chief Richard McCarty.

The new fire department still needs a bathroom and training and meeting facility.

The total cost for the new station was about $40,000. Most of the labor was donated by volunteer firefighters.
