OKLAHOMA CITY -- A local metro man is using his bike to raise money for diabetes research and to possibly save his own life.
Dave Thomas suffers from type 2 diabetes and said riding a bike is a way to fight off a deadly disease that affects 440,000 Oklahomans.
"My wife and I both have diabetes and my dad died. It was a major factor for him dying," Dave Thomas said.
After his father's death, Thomas said he realized it was time for a change. He's been riding for a year and a half and said it has made a differece in his life.
"I feel better. I'm losing weight, get around a lot better, people are noticing. So, it's a good thing," he said.
Thomas said keeping his diabetes under control has taken a lot more than just exercise.
"Got to watch what you eat, take care of what you are doing. Check your blood sugar and monitor it. It's huge. It's huge because if you don't, it will sneak up on you and get a hold of you pretty bad," Thomas said.
Saturday, Thomas road 44 miles in a fundraiser race, but next weekend Thomas said he will ride 63 miles in the "Tour de Cure" race in an effort to raise money for diabetes research to find a cure.
The goal for the American Diabetes Association's "Tour de Cure" is $100,000.
