MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma -- The Navy is full speed ahead in Oklahoma, and activities are planned across the metro for Navy Week to show there is more to the Navy than just ships.
"The focus of the Navy is obviously the seas and providing sea power, but we do things in the air very well," said Captain Tim Pedersen, Deputy Wing Commander of the Strategic Communications Wing ONE.
The Navy plays a very important role at Tinker Air Force Base by providing strategic communication for the president and his staff. That vital information is then relayed from the Navy's Boeing 707.
Pedersen said he is proud of the Navy's presence on Tinker, which is also known as TACAMO, Take Charge and Move Out.
"Our presence was started in '91, '92 time frame. The community has been wonderful to all the sailors and all of us here," Pedersen said.
Captain Pederson called the partnership with the Air Force base a unique one and said it is the wave of the future.
"Jointness is the big word right now and the more we can do and partner with our other services, there is efficiencies in that," Pedersen said.
Since joining Tinker, TACAMO has grown to nearly 1,200 people, and Captain Pederson said they're not going anywhere.
