OKLAHOMA CITY -- A group of Oklahomans is working to bring a street car to Downtown Oklahoma City.

The Modern Transit Project could be executed in as soon as three years and could be powered by Oklahoma's wind energy.

Learn more about the Modern Transit Project.

"The first goal is putting a street car line on Sheridan Avenue. The line would go from Bricktown, past the Cox Convention Center and Myriad Botanical Gardens to the Central Business District," said MTP's campaign director Jeff Bezdek.

The modern street car would have the ability to signal light sensors so the car's path would always get the green light. Those behind the idea say it would be a perfect project to go under Oklahoma City's MAPS3 tax plan.

If it is put into that plan, Bezdek said the Sheridan route could be up and running in as little as 3 years. It would be a welcome addition to those who currently use the downtown trolley.

Passengers have to wait as long as 30 to 40 minutes to catch a ride. In many cases, it would be faster to walk.

The project's price tag sits at an estimated $100 million.

"If wind power is used, much of the project's funding could be matched by the federal government," Bezdek said.

He also said it would be an investment in the future because the line could be added to. For instance, the line could get extended into Midtown and beyond.

Those interested in learning more about MTP, and how MAPS3 should be used for transportation can go to a meeting Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Red Cross Building located at 601 NE 6th street.
