EDMOND, Oklahoma -- The Corps. of Engineers has closed two Arcadia Lake beaches due to a bacteria outbreak. The two beaches are located at Edmond Park and Spring Creek Park.

The lake remains open for water recreation throughout the other areas of the lake.

"Samples have indicated high levels of bacteria in these designated swim areas. In accordance with the EPA's public swim beach regulations per the Corp of Engineers, the beaches will be closed until further samples indicate the water quality is at regulated levels," said Ashleigh Clark, city of Edmond's Public Information Officer.

Results from the June 29 test prompted City and Corps officials to take immediate precautions.

Test results, taken by Accurate Environmental Laboratories, showed elevated levels of E.Coli bacteria in the waters at both beaches. E. Coli is related to animal contamination and with very little rain, lack of winds for circulation and the shallow depths of these particular water areas, water stagnates quickly.

Additional tests will occur Friday morning with results expected early next week however, with little to no change in the weather forecast, changes to the water could be a slow process.

"We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused our residents and lake visitors. We will open these areas up just as soon as we get word that levels are back to normal range," said Clark.
