PUTNAM CITY, Oklahoma -- Every year the Putnam City school district raises money for the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. This year, the students are raising the money in honor of one of their friends.
Lake Park Elementary has out raised every other school in their district for 13 out of the last 15 years. They are giving teachers crazy hair-dos in order to motivate the students.
Lake Park Elementary school Principal John Lunn went with a green mohawk.
"We were celebrating our cancer drive. We raised $9,485 to give to the cancer drive," Principal Lunn said.
The money goes to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation -- a non-profit biomedical institute where researchers are dedicated to understanding and developing treatments for critical diseases.
Former Lake Park student and current middle-school student Connor Ernst has cancer himself, and his friends are raising the funds in his honor. He has Ewing's Sarcoma, a cancer affecting his bones and tissue. His family feels these children are making a difference in other children's lives, including Connor's.
Overall, the PC school district has raised $2.7 million for the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
