OKLAHOMA CITY -- A new study shows Oklahoma ranks one of the highest when it comes to children at risk for being homeless.

A local organization sheds some light on the growing problem in the metro and one local business owner is doing her part to help children in need.

The owner of Salon Endeavor in southwest Oklahoma City is planning to give the proceeds from one day of business to a local organization that reaches out to and educates homeless children.

They don't always know where they will sleep at night or from where their next meal will come.

The students at Positive Tomorrows do know school is the one place they can always count on being there.

"We work with these kids on a more one-on-one basis," Interim Director Laura Myers said. "We have smaller classrooms."

The school takes children from kindergarten to fifth grade. It gives them a safe place to grow academically without that support. The interim director says homeless children lose interest and typically drop out by middle school or high school.

"Not making it to school, their education begins to suffer," Myers said.

"They get stuck in that trap of not having anything and don't know how to better themselves," Salon Endeavor owner Amber Johnson said.

Johnson wants to cut those statistics. She's using her business as a way to give back to homeless children.

"We are offering, on Saturday, March 21, we're doing haircuts at regular cost, but 100 percent of that haircut price will go to Positive Tomorrows," Johnson said.

And in this economy, every extra dollar can make a big difference in a young life.
