Earthquake Shakes Del City Residents

DEL CITY, Oklahoma -- Residents on the southeast side of the metro got a shaky wakeup call Sunday morning. The Oklahoma Geological Survey confirmed there was an 3.4 magnitude earthquake centered near Del City.

While most everyone in one Midwest City neighborhood was asleep, Mike Womack was just getting home from work.

"Me and my wife were reading the paper and the house started shaking like when the B1's fly overhead," Mike Womack said.

But he never heard the rumble of a B1, he just felt a few seconds of shaking.

"Had no clue what it was, never been through one but I kind of figured it was an earthquake," Womack said.

"Yes, there was an earthquake. It was located right at Smith Village and a couple miles from Del City," said Aime Gibson with the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at about 8:07 a.m. Sunday. Preliminary reports put it at a 3.4 magnitude earthquake that shook neighborhoods mostly on the southeast side of the metro. The quake was not strong enough to cause damage, but it did startle some residents.

"I've lived over here all my life and it's the first one I've ever felt," Womack said.

Seismologists said the tremor isn't the first, and won't be the last for this area.

"It's nothing new. Usually we have a bunch of them that aren't really felt," Gibson said.

Last fall, the Oklahoma Geological Survey recorded a swarm of earthquakes in the Del City area, about 17 in one week.
