OKLAHOMA CITY - Republican Mary Fallin and Democrat Drew Edmondson are in the lead as potential candidates for governor in a poll released Friday to NEWS 9.

The race to replace term-limited Governor Brad Henry in 2010 has attracted several candidates and is quickly heating up, NEWS 9 Political Analyst Scott Mitchell said.

The poll conducted by SoonerPoll.com surveyed 339 Oklahomans about their attitudes toward politicians who have expressed interest in running for the office.

Republicans were asked who they would vote for if they had to choose between Congresswoman Mary Fallin, Congressman Tom Cole and State Senator Randy Brogdon.

Fallin led the group with 52 percent followed by Cole at 31.1 percent. See complete results in the slideshow above.

Fallin, a three-time lieutenant governor and current District 5 representative, declared she was officially running for governor last weekend.

"Mary Fallin has held statewide office for a longtime and is very popular," Mitchell said.

Rep. Cole and Sen. Brogdon both said early this month they were considering running for the office as did former Congressman J.C. Watts. Mitchell said a lot could change depending on who enters the race.

Democrats were asked to choose between Attorney General Drew Edmondson and Lt. Governor Jari Askins. Edmondson was favored with 41.9 percent while 28.7 percent chose Askins. About 29 percent were undecided.

Edmondson and Askins were among the first candidates to say they would seek the governor's post in 2010.

The poll had a 5.32 percent margin of error.
