GUTHRIE, Oklahoma -- The family of a Guthrie man accused of killing his 6-year-old daughter is coming to his defense.

Matthew Peoples, 23, was arrested Monday after confessing to shooting his daughter at his Guthrie home, police said.

His daughter, Denise Anderson, was found dead earlier Monday morning near the State Spencer High School baseball field, east of Oklahoma City.

"This was an accident, it wasn't intentional or anything like that," his mother Gloria Peoples said. "He loved his daughter."

"He's not a violent, it's not in his nature," Gloria Peoples said. "He's an easy going person. He loved his daughter. Every chance he'd get, he'd try to go see her."

Matthew Peoples was transported from the Guthrie Police Department to the Logan County Jail Tuesday.

Investigators said they are unsure of a motive. The district attorney said murder charges will likely take a few days to file.

The Peoples family said they'd like to help with funeral expenses for Denise. Her family said those arrangements haven't been made yet.
