OKLAHOMA CITY -- Volunteers counted the number of homeless people in the metro Thursday.

Janet Joubert, along with so many others like her, is struggling to make ends meet. Finding work is tough and there's not enough money for rent.

"I lost my apartment and I was living with friends and relatives," Joubert said. "Finding work is tough and there's not enough money for rent."

Volunteers find Janet's story to be all too familiar. One by one, the homeless in Oklahoma City are being surveyed and the Homeless Alliance said the fastest growing segment of the homeless population is families with children.

"The face has changed," Homeless Alliance volunteer Gerald Scott said, "It's not families. It's mothers with children. So, homelessness can affect anyone."

Across town, in another shelter, young men are also breaking the homeless stereotype.

Antonio Lopez is one of 15 children who call the Carolyn Williams Center home. It's known for helping former foster children who were put out on the street at the age of 18-years-old.

"It was hard," Lopez said. "Don't' know when the next meal was going to come in, don't know when anything was going to happen."

They all have different stories and different backgrounds, but one thing most have in common is they are hopeful and determined to get back on their own two feet.

Counting the number of homeless will help other Oklahoma agencies plan their services.

For more information about the homeless or how to help, call (405) 632-2293 or visit the Homeless Alliance's Web site.
