WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma -- The jury deliberated Friday for more than four hours to determine whether former Custer County Sheriff Mike Burgess is guilty of sexual misconduct.

The jury broke, unable to make a decision, and will reconvene Saturday at 9 a.m.

Burgess is accused in 36 counts of rape, kidnapping, oral sodomy and other offenses of using his authority as sheriff to threaten prison sentences or expulsion from the drug court program if the women didn't give in to his demands for sex.

The prosecution suggested three years in prison on all counts, except charges of rape, rape by instrumentation and sodomy charges, for which prosecutors suggested 10 years in prison.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The trial began January 5.
