OKLAHOMA CITY -- Free screenings for cervical cancer are being offered throughout the month of January and into February by the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing.

Patients can call 271-2124 to schedule an appointment at any of the various Take Charge clinic sites around Oklahoma City.

"Despite the fact that the Pap test is commonly understood by the public as the method of detecting cervical cancer, many women put off the test year after year," said Jennifer Stammer, Take Charge program coordinator at the OU College of Nursing.

The Take Charge! Program works to inform women of early breast and cervical cancer detection.

To qualify, women must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 19-years-old and 64-years-old
  • Women between the ages of 40-years-old and 64-years-old are also eligible for a mammography screening
  • Must not have health insurance, or must have insurance with a high deductible
  • Must not be covered by Medicare of Medicaid
