OKLAHOMA CITY - It was the biggest show in Oklahoma that no one heard about, the 2008 Sooner State Street Music Awards.
The awards show honored artists from all over the state that are involved in the Oklahoma music scene. Rappers, producers, even album cover artists were all in attendance. The show also had an underlining message to those outside of Oklahoma, ‘We're not all country'."
Local artist Jason Miller says that the rest of the country has a big misconception about those who live in the state.
"They still think we're tipping cows and wrestling hay," Miller said. "There's a whole other side to Oklahoma City. There are a whole lot of rappers that's out here that's really hot and unknown. It just takes time and persistence and just staying hungry. Hopefully somebody will get a break."
Rap artist Ja bee Williams won Album of the Year. He says that Oklahoma has good, talented artists that are just as good as the artists that are being promoted on the east and west coasts.
"Every year, every week, every day, I hear new music from Oklahoma and I see knew people that I've never seen before and I'm always impressed," Williams said. "Recently, I was at a show and there was probably 50 people there watching. There was this young kid that was good. I was genuinely impressed and I thought, ‘This kid can go somewhere'."
Co-founder of the Street Music Awards Gary Nichols says that supporting local artists helps with them becoming discovered and breaking old stereo types.
"You got to come out to the events that go on," Nichols said. "There's people that do shows and you won't believe that you just seen all Oklahoma artist that just ripped a show like that."
One of the local shows that leave people wanting more is the Sooner State Street Music Awards. If you want a good sampling of local talent, just attend the awards show later on this year. You won't be disappointed.
"Every year, it keeps getting bigger and better," Nichols said.
